African Starlore Planetarium Film Awarded At The 2022 International Tourism Film Festival Africa![]()
Cape Town, South Africa – (May 11, 2022) The African Planetarium Association (APA) wish to congratulate the production team of Sida Tsoatsoas on winning a Gold Award in the History and Heritage category of the Doc & TV section of the International Tourism Film Festival Awards 2022 which was held in Cape Town on 6th May 2022. The planetarium film, Sida Tsoatsoas – Our Beginning, is the first African-produced digital planetarium film to feature Indigenous African Starlore and was supported by the APA, African Astronomical Society, the South African Astronomical Observatory, the National Arts Council of South Africa – Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme, and the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network. ![]()
The recognition of the film through this award is a milestone and showcases the capacity and capability of Africa to produce world-class planetaria content. This is an achievement for our communities and will drive the future of content development on the continent. ![]()

The Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) is happy to announce the launch of its 11th Annual Call for Proposals for projects that use astronomy as a tool to address one or more challenges related to sustainable development. The call for proposals is open to anyone from anywhere in the world. It is conducted in two stages, where only a limited number of proposals from Stage 1 will be invited to submit a Stage 2 proposal. Projects selected through this call will be implemented in 2023.![]()
Deadline for Stage 1 is May 31, 2022 (midnight UTC-12) - basically the call will close when it is not May 31 anywhere in the world.

Note: A new theme included in this call is ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development’, in view of the United Nations resolution recognizing 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD). Since basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics are an essential part of astronomy, the OAD invites proposals for projects that use any field(s) of basic science(s) in the pursuit of one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
